Applied Math Students Take Field Trip
May 11, 2007- On May 8th, ninth grade students from Mr. Stumpf's Applied Math I course attended the first annual field trip to Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) for their "Math in Careers" day.
Students were divided into small groups based on career interest and were allowed to attend four to five different sessions of interest. The sessions included such careers as cosmetology, firefighting, construction, automotive repair and body work just to name a few. The presenters from the college showed students how math is related and used in all of their vocational programs. Students had a chance to ask questions and perform hands-on activities all related to math in the workplace.
The ninth graders all seemed to enjoy the trip and learn that math is involved to a certain degree in every type of profession. Students were all surprised that strong math skills are necessary for not only the college-bound, but also for those who wish to enter a trade. The students were bolstered by the generous support of 12 chaperones who also attended. Thanks to all who helped, especially Marilyn Allbritton for organizing and making the event a success and to Mr. Stumpf for promoting to his students.
